(CNN Spanish) -

In December 2020, for millions of families around the world there were no reasons to celebrate: the pandemic had claimed, in less than a year, more than 1.8 million lives.

However, Christmas came with an image of hope for Latin America, that of the first people to receive the vaccine against covid-19, starting a new stage in the fight against the deadly virus.

Which countries in the region have already started vaccination and when will the rest?

We show you below a map with the available information.

María Irene Ramírez.

That is the name of the first person to be vaccinated against the coronavirus in Latin America, the head of nursing at an intensive care unit at a hospital in Mexico City.

You received your first injection of the Pfizer / BioNTech vaccine on December 24.

That same day, and within the framework of an unprecedented Christmas, vaccination also began in two other countries in the region: Chile and Costa Rica.

In Chile, the first vaccinated was also a health worker, while in Costa Rica vaccination began in one of the population groups most vulnerable to the coronavirus: the elderly.

The authorities warned that, despite the initiation of the injections, the guard should not be lowered with care.

Days later, on December 29, it was Argentina's turn.

The South American country also started with health personnel.

Unlike the other three, Argentina started with the Sputnik V vaccine from Russia.

Days before, in line with the start of vaccination in the United States, the first injections had begun in Puerto Rico.

What is the vaccination situation in Latin America?

The situation in the rest of the countries is highly variable.

Some have already announced the date when the first doses they negotiated will arrive or the months in which they plan to start the inoculations.

Others have made public details of vaccination strategies or preparations to receive and store the doses, but without giving specific dates.

The plans refer in some cases to the vaccines that governments buy directly and in others those they hope to receive within the framework of the international Covax mechanism, an alliance that seeks to guarantee access to vaccines.

In the map below you can check the situation of each country in the region with regard to vaccination, according to data made public by the authorities.

The information refers to the initiation of inoculations with approved vaccines, not to the application of injections in the framework of phase three trials of some of the vaccines in which countries of the region such as Venezuela and Brazil participated, among others.

Here you can see more details of the information available on Brazil, Bolivia, Colombia, Cuba, Ecuador, El Salvador, Guatemala, Honduras, Nicaragua, Panama, Paraguay, Peru, Dominican Republic, Uruguay and Venezuela.
