The Mayor of Washington, DC, Merial Bowser, today warned of the presence of extremist armed groups in the country that represent a threat to the inauguration of President-elect Joe Biden, stressing the need for the security planning for the inauguration ceremony to be different from its predecessors.
Bowser said in an interview with "CNN" We have very extremist armed groups in our country that represent a source of danger to the host / people who come to demonstrate peacefully are completely different from those we saw sweeping the Congress building on that day and this shows that this is an organized and trained group.
She added that the planning for the inauguration on January 20 should be completely different from its predecessors due to the escalating security concerns in the region after the violence that took place in the Congress building last Wednesday.
Bowser noted that her request from the Interior Ministry to cancel all public gathering permits during the inauguration reflects the level of concern she has about security threats in the capital.
Yesterday, Bowser described the storming of the US Capitol by supporters of outgoing President Donald Trump as an unprecedented rebellion and terrorist attack, and in a document published on her official Twitter account, she called for exceptional security measures to be taken during Biden's inauguration in anticipation of new social unrest.
