"Be careful what you wish for": Trump travels to the border, insists it is dangerous to put him on trial

2021-01-12T22:19:41.356Z

The president warns of the "tremendous anger" that can cause using Amendment 25 or an 'impeachment' procedure against him, but he refuses to assume his responsibilities or call his fans to calm down.

The president, Donald Trump,

has again refused on Tuesday to accept his responsibility

in the assault on the Capitol, which he incited and carried out by his followers in Washington last Wednesday.

Trump traveled to the border with Mexico on Tuesday to highlight what he sees as his Administration's achievements on immigration.

From there he offered his first comments on the deadly attack on the Capitol and on the impeachment to which the Democrats in Congress seek to subject him.

"The 25th Amendment presents no risk to me. But it will come back to haunt Joe Biden and the Biden Administration. As the expression goes, be careful what you wish for."

Leaving the White House to travel to Texas hours earlier, Trump criticized the impeachment trial that Democrats will begin this week in the House of Representatives for their role in the events in the capital.

In his opinion, it is "the greatest witch hunt in the history of politics" and, as he added, it is generating "tremendous anger", possibly in reference to his followers, a comment that takes on special importance when the The FBI has warned of possible violent outbreaks and domestic terrorist attacks in the coming days by fanatics of the president.

The House of Representatives debates this Tuesday an ultimatum to the vice president, Mike Pence, to invoke the 25th amendment to the Constitution and remove Trump from his position as he considers him "incapable of carrying out his functions."

Otherwise, the Democrats, with a majority in Congress, will initiate the second impeachment procedure against the president, accusing him of "incitement to insurrection."

Questioned by reporters about his responsibility in the violent events of the past week, Trump assured that he has always been against violence and that many people believe that his speech, prior to the assault on the Capitol, "was totally appropriate."

In that speech, Trump encouraged his followers to march against Congress and assured them that "they will never take back our country with weakness."

They did so: five people were killed, and the seat of American democracy was sullied.

Trump

has not taken responsibility

for his role in the assault on Congress when the victory of President-elect Joe Biden was to be declared, despite the fact that he has lost allies, the support of the voters and the calls for him to resign are growing, even within his own party.

Likewise, Trump warned today that social media platforms are making a serious mistake, after their accounts were suspended on 10 social media platforms for fear of their inflammatory speech and that it will incite violence again.

In this regard, he said that it is "something very pernicious for the country", and this will cause "many very dangerous problems."

Trump will make

his first public appearance

at a rally in the Alamo, a city on the Texas-Mexico border, where he is expected to promote his immigration policy and discuss his legacy.

It is the president's first opportunity to give a speech to his followers in public after their accounts were suspended.

The apparent purpose of the visit to the small Texas town of Alamo is "to mark the completion of

more than 400 miles of border wall

," according to a statement from the White House.

From the beginning of his campaign for the presidency in 2016, Trump promised to build a "great, beautiful wall" 1,000 miles long which, he promised, would be paid for by Mexico.

However, the 15 billion dollars for the construction of the wall have come from the Departments of Homeland Security, Defense and the Treasury of the United States.

On the other hand, the more than 400 miles built so far are mostly replacement barriers that already existed, according to Reuters, and only 80 miles belong to new structures.
