China has strongly condemned the US inclusion of Cuba on the so-called "American State sponsor of terrorism list".
Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesman Zhao Lijian was quoted by Xinhua as saying at a press conference that China firmly opposes the political repression and economic sanctions imposed by the United States on Cuba under the pretext of fighting terrorism.
In response to a related question, he added that "China has always held that the international community should join hands in fighting terrorism, but it strongly opposes the use of the United States to combat terrorism as an excuse for political repression and the imposition of economic sanctions on Cuba."
"The United States should develop normal bilateral relations with Cuba on the basis of equality and mutual respect, because this will serve the fundamental interests of the two countries and their peoples and will help maintain peace and stability in the Latin American region," he said.
The administration of outgoing President Donald Trump announced, through Secretary of State Mike Pompeo, yesterday, “the re-inclusion of Cuba on the US black list of countries supporting terrorism,” after the administration of former President Barack Obama removed it from this list.
