El Salvador fined Spirit Airlines for allowing, on Thursday last week, the boarding of a passenger with a positive PCR test for covid-19 on a flight to San Salvador from Houston, he said on Monday the general director of the country's Office of Migration and Foreign Relations, Ricardo Cucalón.

The airline has been fined approximately $ 6,000, Cucalón said in statements to local media on Monday.

“I call the airline to solve the problem.

A fine of $ 6,000 does not solve it.

The problem is the risk to which countless people were exposed, ”said Cucalón.

Fifty-eight passengers who traveled on the same flight have been notified, as well as the country's Ministry of Health, as it is up to it to determine the best way to contain the possible spread of the virus, Cucalón said.

He added that the airline was notified of the fine on Sunday.

Spirit Airlines investigates

On Thursday, a Honduran national was allowed to board a flight from the US city of Houston to San Salvador, the capital of El Salvador.

There, immigration officials discovered that the passenger was allowed to travel with a positive PCR test result for covid-19.

Spirit Airlines told CNN on Saturday that it is investigating how the passenger was able to board the plane "despite going through checkpoints" and that it will take appropriate action.

The airline stated that they have protocols to meet the requirements demanded by each country to which they travel.

El Salvador requires all passengers traveling to the country to provide a negative PCR test performed within 72 hours of travel.

The country resumed international flights in September after being shut down for six months due to the coronavirus pandemic.
