The Corona year 2020 was tough for German car dealers: Across Germany, sales fell by almost a fifth to 2.9 million new cars compared to the previous year.

However, there was strong growth in electric cars, as the figures from the Federal Motor Transport Authority show for the year as a whole.

The VW Golf, Germany’s best-selling new car for decades, had 136,324 new registrations in 2020 as a whole - a third less than in 2019. Despite the decline, it is by far the number one favorite among Germans.

The king of company cars, the VW Passat, ranks second in our ranking of the most-registered new car models in 2020 - with 60,904 new registrations from January to December 2020. What is astonishing: Compared to the previous year, Passat sales even increased slightly - by 2.7 percent to be accurate.

In 2020 as a whole, there were 60,380 new registrations in Germany.

In 2019, 87,771 vehicle documents were still issued for the Tiguan, so the sales decline for the Tiguan in the Corona year is 31.2 percent.

Opel's small car Corsa came in 6th place with 53,199 new registrations in 2020 as a whole, so it is a hair's breadth compared to the Octavia.

And the Opel employees should also be pleased that the Corsa was even able to record a slight increase in sales of 3.9 percent compared to 2019 in the Corona year.

This time the VW Polo is in 9th place, which was often in the top 5 in previous years.

BMW's Mini secured place 10 among the most registered cars of 2020.

... the best-selling model with a pure battery-electric drive was Renault's Zoe, which had 30,376 new registrations in 2020 as a whole.

The sharply increased environmental premium probably also played a role here; compared to 2019, the Zoe registration numbers have more than tripled.

However: In the overall ranking of all new German car registrations, the Zoe is only in 24th place.

Second place in the pure electric car ranking goes - surprise - to the e-version of the VW Golf.

Exactly 17,438 units of the fully battery-electric version of the VW bestseller were registered in 2020, two and a half times the number of new e-Golf registrations in 2019.
