The advisor to the Leader of the Iranian Islamic Revolution for International Affairs, Ali Akbar Velayati, confirmed that America is required to lift the embargo on Iran before returning to the nuclear agreement.
The Iranian news agency IRNA quoted Velayati as saying today, "There is no victory and we will not hurry America's return to the nuclear agreement ... Our issue is not based on America's return to the agreement or not ... Rather, our rational and logical demand is to lift the embargo on the country."
Velayati pointed out that, since the signing of the nuclear agreement in 2015 with the five plus one group, Iran has begun to implement its commitments, unlike the Americans, who have delayed canceling the embargo and broke their pledge, stressing that of course, if Washington decided to return to the agreement, it should abolish the embargo on Tehran.
Velayati added, "Given the poor record left by the Americans in implementing pledges, it would be our right not to trust them ... If they want to return to negotiations again without fulfilling their previous obligations, this is unacceptable."
Velayati also expressed his regret over the negative role of the three European countries, “France, Germany and Britain,” in this regard, noting that “these countries follow the example of America and have imposed many restrictions on Iran, which constituted an indirect embargo against us.”
On the other hand, Velayati indicated that the law recently approved by the Iranian Islamic Consultative Assembly to lift the embargo on the country stipulates Iran's need for nuclear technology in the scientific and medical fields, which calls for uranium enrichment to 20%.
Velayati stressed that Iran, like other members of the Treaty on the Non-Proliferation of Nuclear Weapons, has the right to benefit from the peaceful interests of nuclear energy.
