Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu today (Tuesday) paid tribute to philanthropist and owner of "Israel Today" Sheldon Adelson, who passed away at the age of 87 after a struggle with a serious illness.

"With deep sorrow and heartbreak, my wife Sarah and I send our condolences to Dr. Miri Adelson and the entire family on the passing of the late Sheldon Adelson," Netanyahu said during a visit with Health Minister Yuli Edelstein at Clalit Health Fund in Ashdod.

"Many, many people in the Jewish people, in the State of Israel and around the world, share in this heavy mourning. Sheldon's great actions to strengthen Israel's position in the United States and to strengthen the connection between Israel and the Diaspora will be remembered for generations.

"With his wife Miri, Sheldon was one of the greatest contributors in the history of the Jewish people, Zionism, settlement and the State of Israel. From Taglit to Ariel University, from hospitals to medical research - Sheldon contributed extensively to many enterprises that saved lives and raised Israel's fund in the world. "Sheldon and his tremendous contribution to the State of Israel and the Jewish people. May his memory be blessed."
