Today, Mike Pompeo canceled his last European tour and a visit to him abroad as the US Secretary of State that was scheduled for tomorrow to Brussels after European officials refused to meet him at a time when the outgoing US President Donald Trump was threatened with impeachment.
The US State Department justified the cancellation of the tour, according to Agence France-Presse, claiming that Pompeo preferred to stay in Washington to facilitate a smooth and orderly transition of power with the Democratic President-elect Joe Biden's team.
Pompeo was due to be in Brussels on Wednesday and Thursday to meet with his Belgian counterpart, Sophie Vilmes, and NATO Secretary-General Jens Stoltenberg.
Pompeo's last overseas visit was announced on Monday, but coincides with a possible vote in the House of Representatives to launch impeachment measures for Trump after he was involved in inciting violence on the Capitol building last week.
Many US lawmakers and lawmakers are calling on Trump to step down, as they are calling on his deputy, Mike Pence, the government to dismiss him and the Congress to launch impeachment measures after urging his supporters to go to the Capitol to protest against the confirmation hearing on Biden’s victory in the presidency, where they stormed the building and wreaked havoc in it.
