The young Spanish David Cánovas (Alhama de Murcia, 1997), known on the Internet as TheGrefg, broke all world records on Twitch this Monday, the platform owned by Amazon for live broadcasts.

At 10:40 p.m., after two hours and 39 minutes of

streaming

, it has gathered 2,470,347 viewers on its channel, becoming the most watched content in the platform's history.

TheGrefg presented his

skin

in

Fortnite

, this is the image and dance that he has developed under his name for the popular video game developed by Epic Games.

The previous record was held by a CS: GO video game competition in January 2018 with 1.1 million.

The audience reached by TheGrefg once again places the Spanish content creation community at the global forefront of Twitch.

On New Year's Eve, Ibai Llanos (Bilbao, 1995) dared to broadcast the chimes for five hours.

As soon as he arrived at midnight, the former

esports

narrator and now

G2 Esports

streamer

gathered more than 550,000 viewers on his channel, surpassing traditional television networks such as Cuatro and La Sexta.

At the time, it became the third most watched broadcast in the platform's history.

In the case of TheGrefg, which already managed to gather more than 600,000 spectators last year during a Fortnite event, it is striking that it has reached the record only with its own image in front of the camera.

The only thing that fed the live was himself.

It was not about a competition, or someone famous playing or a transgressive format, like the one that Llanos put into practice.

With a white shirt, a red suit and his personality has seen how the spectator counter did not stop growing until reaching the peak during the presentation.

In fact, the Spanish Twitch community, as well as international

Fortnite

players

,

have encouraged people through social networks to join the broadcast.

For a title like

Fortnite

, this presentation was one of the days marked in red by its players on the calendar.

There was a lot of expectation because Epic Games had delayed this content for a year.

It had almost become a laughingstock in the world and jokes came and went about the famous

skin

of TheGrefg, which, like Godot, never came.

Finally, it will be available in the video game store from next January 16.

The fashion platform

TheGrefg's record is yet another example of how well the pandemic has done Twitch.

Born as a platform to broadcast video game games live, it has evolved in the last year to accommodate more varied content and has become one of the platforms of the moment, capable of competing with entertainment giants such as Netflix and HBO.

According to data from TwitchMetrics, during the month of December, users watched more than 10 million hours of content created by Llanos;

more than seven from AuronPlay (Badalona, 1988);

and more than five from other

Spanish

streamers

like Cánovas and Rubius himself.

If we compare the figures worldwide with those of last year, the increase in hours consumed is close to 30%, exceeding 1,200 million in total.

If we look at the number of characters away from the world of video games that have been dropped by Twitch, we also find more evidence of the impact it currently has as a form of entertainment.

With the excuse of their fondness for video games, the American congresswoman Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, the model Laura Escanes, the

youtuber

and music producer Jaime Altozano, the singer Bely Basarte, the humorist Ángel Martín and the disseminator Rocío Vidal have approached new audiences through live broadcasts.

They spend the same time broadcasting a game of

Among Us

than philosophizing about life.

Each one with its own style brings together thousands of viewers just by pressing the live button.

In just two weeks,

Spanish

streamers

have taken the top positions on Twitch.

Its weight is even greater if we add the entire Spanish-speaking community, with content creators such as the Argentine Coscu or PapoMC.

This Monday's TheGrefg record confirms that this platform has become a rival to Netflix or conventional television as an entertainment offer.

The numbers are there: its broadcast was at the level of the audience of the newscasts and very close to iconic programs, such as

El Hormiguero

or

Pasapalabra

.
