Labor chairman Amir Peretz announced this morning (Wednesday) that he is retiring from political life.
"I do not intend to serve in the 24th Knesset," said Peretz, who did not hide his desire to run for president this summer.
"I will not serve in the next Knesset, I will continue to work for the Israeli public out of human love and great faith in the need to bring all parts of the nation together while the internal rift threatens to collapse the foundations on which Israeli society is built."
"All my life I have acted out of a sense of mission and personal example, and that is how I intend to continue to act. We have elected the Honorable Justice Shimoni to chair the Labor Party's Election Commission, which will ensure a fair, transparent and completely independent democratic process."
Peretz, as mentioned, had already announced last month that he would not run for the post of Labor chairman. Peretz (68) was appointed Minister of Economy when the Netanyahu-Ganz government was formed. In the past, he also served as Minister of Defense and Minister of Environmental Protection.
