Brexit is damaging the economy of all participating countries - now the EU is trying to limit the damage for its members.
For example, Germany is to receive over 455 million euros from European funds this year to support fishing and other particularly hard-hit sectors and regions.
The EU Cohesion Commissioner Elisa Ferreira announced on Twitter on Wednesday.
EU Council President Charles Michel had proposed the “Brexit adjustment reserve” in July of last year.
According to the Commission's plans, a total of 5.37 billion euros should be available at current prices.
A good four billion euros should therefore flow in this year and a further billion in 2024.
Of the 27 member states, only Ireland (1.05 billion euros) and the Netherlands (757 million euros) receive more than Germany.
Ferreira explicitly referred to possible recipients of European fishermen who lost part of their fishing rights in British waters when Great Britain left the EU internal market at the turn of the year.
The agreement on future relations with the UK envisages that their catch quotas will be cut by 25 percent over the next five years.
In particular, coastal states such as France, Belgium and Denmark had insisted in the Brexit negotiations on having access to British fishing grounds as before, but to no avail.
The government in Paris is to receive support of almost 421 million euros from the EU pot this year.
The EU member states and the European Parliament still have to approve the Commission's proposal for Brexit aid.
