According to SPIEGEL information, Saxony-Anhalt's Prime Minister Reiner Haseloff decided to run for the Federal Presidium of the CDU at the party congress next weekend.

So far, in his capacity as head of government, he has only participated in meetings of the committee in an advisory capacity.

As head of government he can strengthen the influence of the East German state associations through his active membership, according to the CDU.

With this, Haseloff is to replace the former Thuringian CDU state chief Mike Mohring, who had previously occupied one of the two seats reserved for East Germans in the presidium alongside Saxony's Prime Minister Michael Kretschmer.

Mohring in turn announced that he would run for the CDU federal executive committee;

the body has more members than the presidium.

It is uncertain whether his candidacy will be successful.

After Mohring failed as the top candidate of the Thuringian CDU in the state elections last year, he withdrew from his top positions in Erfurt at the insistence of his party.

Mohring is currently working on his comeback and is running as a direct candidate for the Thuringian constituency 191 in the upcoming federal election.

In addition to the federal chairman, the deputies and several other high-ranking officials, the Presidium has seven additional members who are elected by the CDU federal party congress.

In addition to all members of the Federal Presidium, the Federal Executive Committee also comprises 26 other elected members.

All state chairmen are also part of the committee as advisory members.

Too little diversity in party bodies

From the CDU it is said that there is too little diversity in the field of foreseeable and already nominated candidates for the top bodies.

Many young people are present, but hardly any people with a migration history.

Above all, one would have expected suitable candidates from Berlin and Baden-Württemberg.

Serap Güler, Secretary of State for Integration of North Rhine-Westphalia, is an exception.

»When I ran for the federal executive board for the first time in 2012, there were four of us.

This time I am the only nominee with a migration history for the federal executive board, which is not the right signal, ”Guler told SPIEGEL.

»The CDU urgently needs to do more to support people with a history of migration.

We have to be visible in the party in the necessary breadth, in as many bodies of the federal party as possible, «said Guler.
