Today, the World Health Organization suggested that the second year of the Coronavirus pandemic will be more severe than its first year, given the extent of the virus’s spread, especially in the northern hemisphere, with the outbreak of more aggressive strains.
Reuters quoted Mike Ryan, a WHO official, as saying in a statement that "the second year of this pandemic may be more severe in view of some mechanisms of transmission of infection," adding that "after two weeks of recording fewer cases, five million new cases were detected last week."
In turn, Maria Kerkove, WHO Technical Chief on COVID-19, said: "After the holidays in some countries, the situation will get worse before it gets better."
The World Health Organization held a meeting of 1750 international scientists yesterday to discuss knowledge gaps and research priorities for emerging variables around the Corona virus.
