While hundreds of motorists spent the night stranded in the cold and snow on the A40 in Ain, Météo France placed nine departments in the east of the country on Thursday, orange vigilance for snow and ice.
This concerns Haute-Savoie, which was already on alert in the morning, and now the Ardennes, Meuse, Meurthe-et-Moselle, Vosges, Moselle, Bas-Rhin, Haut-Rhin and the Territory of Belfort.

"Limit your movements and facilitate the passage of snow-clearing machines", calls the Ministry of the Interior.
According to the forecaster, 7 to 15 centimeters (locally 20 centimeters) of snow is expected in these departments.
High risk of avalanches in the Alps
The flakes will fall in the middle of the night on the north of Lorraine and Alsace and could arrive in the middle of the morning on Thursday in the Lille metropolis.
Météo France also reports a high risk of avalanches in the Northern Alps.
New snowfall, quite significant, will be added to that which started on Tuesday.
