Trump lies about arresting immigrants with criminal records

2021-01-13T18:43:42.117Z

The president uses false data on the arrests of undocumented people on criminal charges. We explain why what the president says is a lie.

In his first public event since the assault on the Capitol by his supporters last week, President Donald Trump boasted Tuesday that his administration has arrested nearly 500,000 undocumented immigrants with criminal records.

That is false.

Trump traveled to the city of Alamo, in the state of Texas, to celebrate the construction of 450 miles of barriers between the United States and Mexico.

During his speech, he stressed that the barrier had facilitated the work of the Border Patrol, helping to stop the illegal passage of people and drugs.

“We have arrested nearly 500,000 undocumented immigrants with criminal records, some with very serious records that they don't want to know about;

some with homicide, ”he said.

His own administration's data contradicts Trump, and by far.

Between fiscal year 2016 and so far in 2021, which includes the Trump presidency, the Border Patrol has detained 37,432 foreign nationals with criminal records, according to official data.

It should be noted that fiscal year 2016 includes almost four months of the Barack Obama administration.

The current fiscal year ends on September 30.

 Within the category of "criminal aliens," the Government includes people who have committed one or more crimes inside or outside the United States prior to their most recent encounter with the Border Patrol.

The number of migrants with criminal records who have been arrested has been declining markedly, from 12,842 in fiscal year 2016 to just 2,438 in fiscal year 2020. So far this fiscal year - which began on October 1 -, the arrests total 2,654.

In his speech, which was just over 20 minutes long, Trump also said that some of these immigrants had homicide histories.

The truth is that only 21 people, that is, 0.05% of the total, face homicide charges.

The vast majority (56%) of immigrants classified by the government as “criminal aliens” received that designation for re-entering the United States illegally: a total of 20,860.

Taking into account that Customs and Border Protection recorded, for example, about 460,000 encounters with migrants in fiscal year 2020 and nearly a million in fiscal year 2019, the number of migrants with criminal records that the United States arrests is a tiny fraction of the total.
