US President-elect Joe Biden has nominated Samantha Power as the future head of the USAID development agency.
Power is the former US Ambassador to the United Nations.
Biden described Power in a statement on Wednesday as "a world-renowned voice of moral clarity."
She will be a "powerful voice for the vulnerable" and contribute to a new era of "human progress and development".
The 50-year-old Power was ambassador to the United Nations in New York from 2013 to 2017 under US President Barack Obama, a prominent diplomatic position in the cabinet.
Most recently, she taught at the elite Harvard University.
The US Senate has yet to confirm Power in office.
In her future role, she is to become a member of the US National Security Council.
USAID has an annual budget of around $ 20 billion.
Under the administration of the outgoing President Donald Trump, development policy had lost its importance.
Trump campaigned for a cut in financial resources.
The Democrat Biden wants to revalue the area after taking office.
