This week, the Ministry of Education is holding a series of consultations with teachers from various schools to get an up-to-date picture of the students' readiness for winter matriculation.

The first matriculation exam, in mathematics, is due to take place in three weeks, on February 1, and many educators indicate that students are far from ready.

Education ministry officials told Walla!

NEWS that in light of the third closure, the situation will be re-examined and that the decision regarding the date of the winter exams should be made in the coming days.

However, at present no change is expected.

The winter matriculation date has already been postponed for a month following the previous two closures.

Last month, the Ministry of Education ruled that students would be tested in five external subjects instead of six, the study material was reduced and the choice of exam questions was increased.

However, it seems that the planning still does not correspond to reality, and in practice only two and a half weeks before the first matriculation, many high school students feel that they are not ready at all.

The level of stress is rising due to the doubt whether students in grades 11-12 will have time to return to school before the exams.

Healy Greenberg, an 11th grade student from Tel Aviv, will soon have two matriculation exams - in less than a month an internal history exam, and two weeks later an English matriculation.

"I have been under pressure for a long time.

It's very difficult, "she said." During the year we were hardly in school, it is not really possible to study in zoom, the material is not really transferred there.

I talked about it with quite a few friends, almost none of them feel ready.

The teacher herself also told us that she had not yet transferred even half of the material.

Maturity in a month and we have no other option. "

"Almost no one feels ready."

Greenberg added that she uses private lessons to still be able to prepare for the exam.

She said, "It is impossible without it today. The matriculation in our history has already been postponed once and the teacher says that it will not be possible to postpone it again."

"The psychological damage to students is far greater than the academic damage"

The director of Urban D High School in Tel Aviv, Nati Stern, will attend a principals 'meeting with the pedagogical secretariat of the Ministry of Education, which is supposed to deal with the issue of distinguishing students' readiness for combat matriculation.

Stern believes that the date of the winter should be postponed to the summer and the amount of material should be reduced by a third, leaving only 4-3 exams in the next two years due to the students' unwillingness.

"The timing of this meeting is strange - just two weeks before the first exam. I do not have much hope in this meeting," Hellen Stern.

"Out of 950 study hours per year for 11th-12th grade students, there were about 250 frontal study hours, less than 30% of the lessons are done, but no one bothers to cut the material. In biology in general, they added a chapter."

"Less than 30% of classes are done."

According to Stern, the postponement of winter months in a month is far from sufficient.

"Thank you very much for postponing for a month, but the story is not even the rejection, but the reduction of the material. We reduced the instruction, let's say not by 70%, I will be large, by 40%, but the material was reduced by only 10% -5% "What do they expect to happen? They do not want to ruin their eligibility for matriculation, but in practice many good students will fail and get far less good grades than they are capable of," he explained.

Stern warned of the psychological consequences of approaching exams on students who do not feel ready.

He said, "The mental damage to the students is much greater than the academic damage. Do you know what pressure the teachers and children are under? They are all under insane pressure. I have teachers who tear their hair out. They tell me they can not teach zoom, children can no longer study zoom and every day passes "The exam is approaching. The teachers say that they are not able to reach the 40% power that was supposed to be during this period. There is also a jump in the number of children talking about extreme stress."

"We do not have time to pull"

Acting Chairman of the National Student and Youth Council, Yuval Godker, said that "we fear that further distance learning will lead to devastating consequences. The poor conduct of decision makers will lead to serious learning gaps and even greater appeal to the system. We have no time to pull. "Soon, and we will definitely not disappear. As for our future, who knows?"

The student council said that "in the current situation, we, the students, are not at all ready for the matriculation exams. After more than a year of studies during the corona period, and ongoing closures, it seems that the decision makers are completely disconnected from the field."

"Poor conduct of decision makers."

The students added that "it is shameful to think that in an advanced country like Israel, the health system repeatedly fails to find appropriate solutions for those approaching matriculation. If the education system remains closed, thousands of 11th and 12th grade students will completely fail in winter matriculation."

"We sit in front of a screen every day for more than eight hours in so-called 'learning' without taste, time passes and we stay in the same place. We implore the Ministry of Health, allow us to study properly for the matriculation exams - for the future of our generation and the whole country."
