Anne Hidalgo: "At this rate, it would take 34 weeks to vaccinate Parisians over 75"

EXCLUSIVE. The mayor (PS) of Paris urges the government to deliver more doses of the vaccine, as 19 centers open from Mon

After sharply criticizing the government's vaccine strategy against Covid-19, Anne Hidalgo, the mayor (PS) of Paris, announces the creation of 19 centers in the capital.

They will open to those over 75 from Monday, January 18.

You have just validated the vaccination plan for Paris with the police prefect and the regional health agency.

What is he?

ANNE HIDALGO.

From Monday January 18, 19 centers will open for those over 75 years old.

There may be a small two-day lag in the 20th arrondissement.

That of the 6th will open a little later, at the mayor's request.

Each district will have a center.

The most populous, namely the 13th, 15th and 19th, will have a second.

Then, by early February, five other centers will open.

This will allow districts with a large population, such as the 17th, to also count on a second center.

How many doses do you have?

We should get 10,000 for the first week.

This is too little, because Paris has 170,000 inhabitants over 75 years old.

At this rate, it would take 34 weeks to vaccinate all of them

(Editor's note: to administer the two necessary doses)

.

An acceleration of the process is necessary, to move quickly, I hope, towards a generalization of vaccination.

Can Paris expect to receive more doses each week soon?

The state has announced a gradual ramp-up.

For our part, we have at this stage a theoretical capacity, thanks to our centers, of 25,000 weekly vaccinations.

But much less vaccines delivered by the State… These figures, the French must know them.

I asked the government for the greatest transparency on this subject, so that each citizen is assured of strict equality and precise information regardless of the territory in which he lives.

What part goes to the City in this vaccination campaign?

We take care of "the last mile", because we have to rely on those who have the logistical capacity: cities and departments.

The City of Paris will therefore be responsible for transporting vaccines from the central pharmacy in Nanterre

(Hauts-de-Seine)

to the vaccination centers, then technical, logistical and administrative support in each of the centers.

Has the financial cost to the City been assessed?

We already had transport vehicles.

Our agents are already trained because we have maintained a quality public service in Paris.

But I told the State that we were going to keep very precise accounts on this competence which is transferred to us.

We are also still waiting for the promised aid to deal with confinements and orders for masks.

How can we make an appointment?

Each Parisian center will create appointment slots on Doctolib or equivalent platforms, depending on the number of vaccines actually delivered by the State.

But I indicated to him that some elderly people might have difficulty using such tools.

This is why 3975, a number known to Parisians, which they can call in the event of the slightest problem, will be mobilized from this Friday morning.

Operators will be able to make an appointment for those who are not comfortable with computers, such as in a medical secretary.

How will the elderly who are unable to move?

We are currently working on it.

The main difficulty in this case is transporting the vaccine.

We will have to think of a different packaging because the vaccines must be injected a few hours after being taken out of the medical refrigerators.

We are awaiting instructions from the health authorities and hope to be able to give good news on this subject in the coming days.

How do you judge the health situation in Paris?

We fought for a very large number of antigenic tests.

Each patient was thus able to be tested with a rapid result and adopt a behavior capable of slowing down the epidemic during the second wave, much more than during the first where we were strongly affected.

But of course, we are worried.

In relation to the capacities of hospitals to respond to the influx of patients.

Compared to highly contaminating variants of the virus.

And because our indicators alert us to traces of coronavirus in wastewater

(Editor's note: which raises fears of an imminent increase in people declared positive)

.

It's a real race against time: that's why we must vaccinate as quickly as possible, as many people as possible.

The last few days have been marked by verbal battles between you and the government.

Is this the prelude to the presidential election?

When there is an unsatisfactory situation, I express it. And fortunately I have done it several times, on masks, on tests, on vaccines ... The French need to have elected officials who say what they know, what they don't know, what whether they are allowed to do so or not. A country in which we would be afraid to ask questions because they would disturb more or less well-established communication plans would have major concerns. I will continue to play my role to protect Parisians and our fellow citizens.
