The persecuted Muslim minority of the Rohingya live in precarious conditions, hundreds of thousands live in pitiful camps.
The ethnic group expelled from Myanmar is also not welcome in neighboring Bangladesh. Most recently, the government relocated thousands of Rohingya to an island that is little more than a pile of silt.
A devastating fire in a Rohingya camp in southern Bangladesh has now left serious damage.
According to the UN refugee agency, 550 accommodations were at least partially destroyed by the fire in Camp Nayapara, an estimated 3500 people would have lost their homes.
In addition, around 150 shops were destroyed by the fire.
Apparently there were no dead or injured.
As reported by the AP news agency, the camp is not far from the border with Myanmar.
In total, there are around one million Rohingya who have fled the region.
The Nayapara camp has therefore existed for many years.
"This is another major blow to the Rohingya, who have been living under unimaginable conditions for years," said Onno van Manen, director of the aid organization Save The Children in Bangladesh.
The fire robbed the people of the little protection and dignity that was left to them.
