At the memorial site in Buchenwald, security has been stepped up, due to the custom of local residents to use the steep hill on which it stands as a snow-skiing trail.

The management of the Memorial Museum in the former Nazi concentration camp Buchenwald in Germany has stepped up security around the memorial site, after it was revealed that people were coming to the place to go skiing.

In the area where the camp site is located, a thick layer of snow has accumulated in recent days, and residents of nearby communities have come to the area of ​​the Memorial Museum, located on a hill, for winter sports activities. 

Among other things, it turned out that the improvised ski slopes run through mass graves, where the remains of the bodies of thousands of camp inmates who were murdered or died before the camp was liberated in April 1945 or after. 

The management of the memorial site has issued a statement in which it seeks to respect the honor of the dead and the entire camp area and the burial areas adjacent to it and to refrain from any sports activities on the camp grounds.

The announcement emphasizes that sports activities in the area of ​​the former concentration camp constitute a violation of the rules of visiting the place.

Between 1937 and 1945, about 56,000 people were murdered by the Nazis in the Buchenwald concentration camp.
