The government of Guatemala decreed a state of prevention in the departments of Izabal, Zacapa, Chiquimula, Jutiapa, El Progreso, Petén and Santa Rosa due to the risk of contagion of covid-19 in the face of the migrant caravan that moves from Honduras with the ultimate goal of reaching the United States.

A group of approximately 250 people left San Pedro Sula, Honduras early Thursday, according to Commissioner Jair Meza, a spokesman for the Ministry of Security.

The norm published this Thursday explains that “the order, governance and security of the inhabitants may be affected by virtue of the fact that people and groups of people can put life, liberty, justice, safety, health, peace and the integral and patrimonial development of the inhabitants ”.

In a joint statement issued on Monday, the governments of El Salvador, Guatemala, Honduras and Mexico made a “strong call” to avoid exposing unaccompanied and separated minors “to the dangers that irregular migration entails, anticipating that they are possible victims. of crimes associated with irregular migration ”.

They warned that people can endanger the most vulnerable groups, "using them to form human barriers, putting their lives and their families at risk."
