The second impeachment proceedings against Donald Trump have been launched - and will go down in the history books.

Nancy Pelosi, Speaker of the House of Representatives, signed after the successful vote the enforcement of the impeachment article against Trump, the so-called "Article of Impeachment".

Nancy Pelosi, Speaker of the US House of Representatives:

“Today the House demonstrated bipartisan that no one is above the law, not even the President of the United States.

That Donald Trump is a clear and present threat to our country.

Once again to honor our oath of office to defend the United States Constitution, so help us God. "

For the first time ever, MPs in the House of Representatives voted to launch a second impeachment trial against a US president.

Trump is accused of “inciting a riot”.

He provoked the storming of the Capitol on January 6th and threatened US security and democracy in the country.

This was also the subject of the previous debate in Parliament:

Nancy Pelosi, Speaker of the US House of Representatives:

“It is clear that the President of the United States started this uprising, this armed rebellion, against our common land.

He has to go.

He is a clear and present danger to the nation we all love. "

Adam Schiff, Democrat from California:

“Today we are invoking the means the Founders envisioned for such an outlaw president: impeachment.

(…) In order to preserve this holy place, this citadel of democracy, for ourselves and for posterity, let's say: Enough! «

232 members of parliament voted for the impeachment, 197 against.

Some Republicans argued that the impeachment process was rushed and urged Democrats to abandon efforts in the interests of national unity.

But at least ten Republicans voted for the impeachment.

Dan Newhouse, Republican from Washington State:

“This charge is flawed.

But I'm not going to use the procedures as an excuse.

There is no excuse for President Trump's actions.

The president has taken an oath to defend the constitution against all enemies - foreign and domestic.

Last week there was a national threat at the door of the Capitol.

And he didn't do anything to stop it.

Therefore, with a heavy heart and with a clear determination, I will vote in favor of these articles of the indictment. "

Few Republicans defended Trump's words or actions, but also did not vote for the impeachment - probably also out of fear.

Jason Crow, Republican from Colorado:

“Some of my Republican colleagues fear the consequences of impeachment.

But this congress sends young men and women to war every day.

I am not asking you to storm the Normandy beaches, but show only a fraction of the courage we ask of our troops every day.

Leadership is difficult.

It's time for an impeachment. "

Since the riots last week that caused the impeachment, the National Guard has been on guard around the clock - on and in the Capitol.

Hundreds of guardsmen are currently in the parliament building.

And the current president?

Donald Trump published a video on Twitter in the evening in which he tried to distance himself from the riots, he did not mention the impeachment against him at all.

Donald Trump, US President:

“Right or left, Democrat or Republican, there is no justification for violence.

No excuses, no exceptions.

America is a nation of law.

Those who were involved in the attacks last week will be brought to justice. "

In the impeachment process, it is now the Senate's turn.

It will probably only be initiated after the inauguration of the new President, Joe Biden.
