"Unfortunately, the shocking event in the Nabataean cemetery is not the first case of the destruction of graves here," said Nir Zamir, head of the Bnei Shimon Regional Council, which houses the cemetery.
According to him, the residents of the area suffer from criminal offenses and incidents of violence on a regular basis.
"The Nabataean settlement, like other places in the Negev, has long suffered from repeated violent incidents, property damage, burglaries, thefts and attempts to harm the settlement's security team," he noted.
The head of the council called on the police to increase their presence in the area, and to fight the rising crime.
"The Negev must not be allowed to be the Wild West," he said, explaining that the tombstone destruction event "once again emphasizes the clear need to increase the presence of the Israeli police throughout the Negev.
" I call on the police to act vigorously against this phenomenon. This one, "Zamir concluded.
"This situation needs to be put to an end and I believe in the ability of the police to do that."
