Israel intends to ask the new US administration not to put pressure on Saudi Arabia, Egypt and the United Arab Emirates and to avoid confrontations with them on human rights issues and other regional issues such as the war in Yemen - senior security officials told Walla!

NEWS.

Elected President Joe Biden has promised to put the issue of human rights protection high on the list of foreign policy priorities in his administration.

In telephone conversations with world leaders after his election victory - Biden did not speak with leaders of Saudi Arabia, Egypt and the United Arab Emirates - although they are considered key allies of the United States in the region.

During the election campaign, he even voiced harsh criticism of Saudi Arabia over the war in Yemen.

On the other hand, Israel sees its security and intelligence relations with Saudi Arabia, Egypt and the United Arab Emirates as a key factor in the strategy to contain Iran and as an important component in regional security.

Jerusalem fears that Biden will not only try to return to the nuclear deal with Iran, but will also cool its relations with the United States' Arab allies in the region.

Saudi Arabia, the United Arab Emirates and Egypt welcomed the controversial announcement by US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo this week that Houthi rebels in Yemen would be declared a terrorist organization.

Israel has not taken a position on the decision, but recently the defense establishment has been paying special attention to Yemen.

Defense officials said that this was also due to fears of Houthi attacks on Israeli ships passing through the Red Sea off the coast of Yemen, but mainly because of the negative consequences that could continue to the Iranian base in Yemen on Saudi Arabia and Egypt.

In Israel, it is estimated that Biden will significantly change American policy toward Yemen, especially with regard to Saudi Arabia's role in the war there.

The Trump administration has backed the Saudis and has taken almost no stance on harming innocent civilians in the Saudi bombings.

Preference for developing relationships

Defense officials said Israel intended to encourage the new administration in the United States to make sure that the change in policy would not deepen Iranian influence in Yemen, and would not jeopardize regional cooperation between Israel, the United States and Arab countries on other issues.

Fear would cool the relationship.

Israeli officials have said they intend to emphasize to the Biden administration that significant changes have taken place in the region in recent years, as part of which a regional alliance has been formed as a result of warming relations between Israel and Arab countries.

Israel hopes that the Biden administration will give priority to strengthening this process over its concerns about the war in Yemen and human rights violations in Saudi Arabia and Egypt.

At the same time, they said that in recent weeks Israel has encouraged Egypt and Saudi Arabia to take human rights measures in order to improve the atmosphere and prepare the ground for dialogue with the Biden administration.

Officials said they intended to stress to the Biden administration that a crisis in relations with Saudi Arabia, Egypt and the UAE could push them away from the United States and push them into the arms of Russia and China.

"We were already very close to losing Egypt a few years ago, so our message to the Biden administration will be: 'Slowly, dramatic changes have taken place, do not come with preconceived notions and do not damage relations with Saudi Arabia, Egypt and the UAE,'" a senior security official said. .
