Faced with the arrival of a second wave of covid-19 infections, the Government of Peru announced measures to control the advance of the pandemic.


From January 15 to 31, regulations that have been defined as "focused" will come into force, said interim president Francisco Sagasti, at a press conference this Wednesday.

The regions of Peru will be classified into four risk groups for covid-19: extreme, very high, high and moderate.

At the moment, no area is at the extreme level, but if the case arises, a total confinement of its population would be decreed.

The Ancash, Ica, Junín, Lambayeque, Lima provinces, Piura and Tacna regions were classified at the “very high” level of risk of covid-19.

There, the curfew will rule from 7 in the afternoon until 4 in the morning the next day.

On Sundays, the movement of cars and pedestrians is prohibited and the capacity in shops, gyms, cinemas and other establishments will be reduced.

The regions of Arequipa, Apurímac, Cajamarca, Callao, Cusco, Huánuco, La Libertad, Metropolitan Lima, Madre de Dios, Moquegua, Cerro de Pasco, Puno and Tumbes will be at the “high” level of risk of covid-19.

The driving restriction starts a little later, at 9 p.m. until 4 a.m. the next day.

In those regions, a larger capacity will be allowed in shops and other establishments.

Finally, at the “moderate” level of covid-19 risk in Peru will be the Amazon, Ayacucho, Loreto, Huancavelica, San Martín and Ucayali regions.

There, the curfew will be in effect between 11 p.m. and 4 a.m.

The allowed capacity will be the following: «40% in casinos, gyms, cinemas, theaters and performing arts;

30% for churches;

50% for shopping centers, galleries, department stores and stores;

These measures will be reviewed every fifteen days while there is a group of rules that will remain the same for all cases, such as masks in public places, hand washing, physical distancing, use of open and ventilated spaces, avoid crowds and closed places. , restricting the use of beaches and promoting remote work in the public and private sectors.

As of Wednesday, the Peruvian Ministry of Health confirmed 1,043,640 cases of covid-19 and 38,473 deaths from the disease.
