Parts of Coubertinplatz in Munich's Olympiapark will soon be renamed in honor of a former mayor of the city.
The city council is expected to agree in February.
The Olympic Games in Munich * will always be
in contact
with
Hans-Jochen Vogel
.
After all, it is thanks to the Mayor of Munich at the time that the Bavarian capital prevailed against competitors such as Rome and Tokyo in the competition to host the 1972 Games.
It was Hans-Jochen Vogel who won over the committee in 1966 with a speech that the then town hall chief had learned by heart "to increase the effect", as Vogel writes in his book "The Chain of Office".
Munich should, among other things, offer games “that are short distances”, it continues.
And one of these paths is now to be named after the old OB who died on July 26, 2020.
Munich Olympic Park: Coubertinplatz should be smaller because of Hans-Jochen Vogel
According to a draft resolution for the meeting of the municipal committee on February 4, it concerns the open space west of the Olympic swimming pool, between the Olympic hall and stadium, north of the Olympic lake up to the Rudolf-Harbig-Weg.
This part of Coubertinplatz is to be renamed Hans-Jochen-Vogel-Platz.
The SPD in the city council had applied for an area to be named after the
former mayor
and former federal minister.
The renaming of the square is now a proposal by the administration and apparently corresponds to the request of Vogel's wife Liselotte.
The square was originally named in 1971 after the founder of the modern Olympic Games, Pierre de Coubertin, who will in future only give his name to a smaller part of the area.
The city administration takes a critical view of renaming itself.
They are only made for
valid reasons
, for example if it turns out afterwards that the person did not deserve such an honor.
Such reasons did not exist with the former President of the IOC, Coubertin (1863-1937).
Munich: Large open space in the Olympiapark is to become Hans-Jochen-Vogel-Platz
The
Coubertinplatz
extends from the mouth of Luz-long shore and Lillian Board path in the east to the beginning of the Rudolf Harbig path to the west.
There is a roof between the swimming pool and the Olympic Stadium, which visually separates it from the west.
Below is the entrance to the Olympic swimming pool, the only address on Coubertinplatz.
According to the city administration, this situation opens up the possibility of limiting Coubertinplatz to the eastern part of the area up to the roof.
This means that the name after Coubertin and the address of the swimming pool can be retained.
The large open space to the west is named after Hans-Jochen Vogel.
50 years of the Olympics - the big anniversary of the Games in Munich is to be celebrated in 2022.
The budget for the spectacle is huge.
