The Ombudsman Zhao Huixian, the

first human case of hepatitis E infection in a rat in Hong Kong since 2018,

said that rat infestation not only causes environmental nuisance, affects the daily life of citizens, but can also spread a variety of serious diseases.

She pointed out that she noticed that different media reported serious rodent problems in many FEHD markets last year. At the same time, since the world’s first human case of hepatitis E infection in rats was discovered in 2018, Hong Kong has recorded a total of up to December 2020. The situation of more than 10 confirmed cases is cause for concern.

She continued that in view of this, she decided to initiate a proactive investigation to review the effectiveness of the FEHD’s rodent prevention and control work, and make suggestions for improvement when necessary.

The Ombudsman is now collecting information and opinions on the above issues.

If citizens have any information or comments, they can submit them in writing to the Office of The Ombudsman on or before February 14, 2021.

At present, the pest control team under the Food and Environmental Hygiene Department is responsible for rodent control and rodent control in public places in Hong Kong.

The main tasks of the pest control team include conducting rodent reference index surveys, inspecting places with potential rodent problems, such as back lanes and illegal waste disposal black spots, and taking appropriate control measures.

The department will also provide rodent control training and technical support to other government departments that manage public venues and premises.
