Tonight (Thursday), eight members of the Labor Party's management issued a call to former Prime Minister Ehud Barak to run for the Labor Party presidency, in primaries to be held in about two weeks.

"The interim order requires you to report for the campaign for the benefit of the State of Israel," read a request from members of the management.

"The vacuum is very large, and no other figure with the experience, leadership and national status he has, in order to succeed in leading a move to change the government, is seen on the political map," they added.

"A race led by the Labor Party to lead the country will be a move that will change the political map dramatically."

At the end of the letter, signed by former MKs Raanan Cohen, Leah Padida, Yokneam Mayor Simon Alfasi and chairman of the Labor faction in the Histadrut Pini Kabalo, among others, they call on Barak to run for the leadership of the Labor Party.

"You have the power to enlist in Order 8 and not sit on the sidelines. Give hope to many in the Israeli public."

All the signatories to the letter are considered supporters of the current chairman of the Labor Party, Amir Peretz.

Peretz has announced that he does not intend to run in the upcoming elections, but does intend to run for the presidency this summer.

There are currently two candidates in the primaries for the party leadership - MK Merav Michaeli and Adv. Gil Beilin.

In the coming days, Minister Itzik Shmuli is expected to decide whether he will also join the race.

Former JNF chairman Danny Atar may also join the race.

Barak himself recently ruled out in media interviews the possibility of running again in the upcoming elections, and in previous Labor leadership primaries - a year and a half ago - he chose not to run for the party but to establish his own independent framework, Democratic Israel, which later ran for Meretz. September 2019.

The primaries will take place on January 24.

Earlier today, the Supreme Court ruled that the Labor Party's primaries will take place on January 24.

This follows a legal battle waged by party chairman Amir Peretz and MK Michaeli, after Peretz passed a decision transferring the election authority to the Labor Conference, but MK Michaeli fought it legally and the district court ordered him to overturn the decision.
