The PA chairman issued a presidential decree announcing elections to the Palestinian parliament on May 22, followed by elections to the PA presidency on July 31. In the previous elections, Abu Mazen won by a large majority, while in the 2006 parliamentary elections Hamas won a majority.

Palestinian Authority Chairman Mahmoud Abbas issued a presidential decree this evening (Friday) announcing parliamentary elections on May 22, as well as PA elections on July 31. The last Palestinian parliamentary elections were held in 2006, with Hamas winning the majority. The last presidential election was held in 2005 and Abu Mazen won by a large majority

This is the first time in 15 years that a presidential decree has been published on a specific date for elections.
