Is the Wörthsee freezing over?

Do locals and day tourists storm the small lakes in the Fünfseenland at the weekend?

The weather report is imprecise.

The communities are arming themselves anyway.

“We are prepared,” emphasizes the water rescue service.

Weßling / Wörthsee

- Mayor Christel Muggenthal already had a major concern in the annual discussion with Starnberger Merkur: What happens when the Wörthsee freezes over?

Do local residents and day tourists from the surrounding area then storm the community?

How do the rescue workers manage this?

The weather seems to at least play into the hands of the district.

It is getting cold and the Weßlinger See has long been closed.

However, thaw and snowfall have turned the ice in Weßling into a mogul slope.

And Wörthsee and Pilsensee need a lot more than a few cold nights.

Nevertheless, the communities of Weßling, Wörthsee and Seefeld am Pilsensee have armed themselves.

“We have put up signs around the lake, on which we indicate the minimum distance and the applicable regulations,” says Weßling's managing director Astrid Kahle.

You can't forbid people to go out and on the lake.

“But the regulations also apply there.” The Mayor of Wörthsee, Christel Muggenthal, sees it similarly.

Andrea Grün from the administration made signs yesterday, which she then placed at all public lake accesses.

So far, however, little has been seen of the ice on the Wörthsee.

The wind destroyed the few existing ice surfaces.

"Long-time residents say that the ice cream won't do anything," says Muggenthal and hopes that they are right.

Since people cannot go skiing, “they all come to us when there is ice”.

It is unimaginable what will happen then, especially with a view to the rescue workers.

These are meanwhile prepared for a rush.

"We are already in the starting blocks the whole time," reports Jule Heuchert, press spokeswoman for the Wörthsee water rescue service.

Should the lake freeze over, the water rescue service and the Steinebach-Auing fire brigade are on standby together.

Because the fire brigade is in possession of the hovercraft, which is also manned by volunteers from the water rescue service.

“We have already discussed everything, the equipment is ready,” says Heuchert.

Will the lake still freeze over this year?

“Probably not this weekend”, estimates Heuchert.

In 2017, however, it was 15 degrees warm in between.

Then two weeks of frost followed, “and the lake was closed”.

As nice as ice is, under these conditions it would be better if it didn't happen this year.

"When the lake freezes over, they overrun us."

The water watch at Pilsensee is also watching the water surface with concern.

"If it freezes over, we will definitely organize an ice watch immediately," says spokeswoman Manuela Wunderl.

“It would be better if it didn't happen.” Seefeld's mayor, Klaus Kögel, would never have thought “that I would ask that the lakes not freeze over”.

In fact, however, “I am afraid of what will happen then”.

However, he has already short-circuited with Innings Mayor Walter Bleimeier.

"We can react at short notice", for example with no stopping and the like.

The Seefeld administration is also currently producing signs to indicate distance and hygiene rules at the public bathing areas on Lake Wörth and Pilsensee.

Only in the worst case, a closure of the waters is conceivable, "but that must of course be discussed with the lake owner and the district administrator".
