The United Nations has warned that the world may witness a major disaster in the 21st century after 2020 has become one of the warmest years in human history.
The World Meteorological Organization of the United Nations and Russia Today said, "The year 2020 was among the three warmest years in addition to 2016 and 2019 since meteorological records began 140 years ago," explaining that the difference between them is very small.
The average temperature in 2020, according to the data of the United Nations, reached about 14.9 degrees Celsius, which exceeds the pre-industrial level of 1850 to 1900 by 1.2 degrees.
The organization pointed out that the decade between 2011 and 2020 was the warmest on record, while the last six years since 2015 have become the hottest in history, while statistics have shown that every decade since the 1980s has exceeded the previous one.
The Secretary-General of the United Nations, António Guterres, described these statistics as "another stark indication that climate change continues unabated," warning that this phenomenon "is destroying lives and livelihoods in the world."
The United Nations Environment Program called yesterday on the countries of the world to expand the scope of their work to adapt to the new climate reality to avoid incurring heavy costs and losses, with the intensification of the effects of high temperatures and climate change.
