Congratulations five days before the swearing-in: US Vice President Mike Pence apparently congratulated Vice President-elect Kamala Harris on the election victory and offered his support.
The AP news agency and the New York Times report unanimously.
Accordingly, two newspaper officials described the conversation as "pleasant and friendly."
The phone call is the first known conversation between representatives of the outgoing and incoming government since the November election.
According to the New York Times, there are also plans for Harris to visit Pence.
It is unclear whether this will happen before the swearing-in.
President Donald Trump has so far avoided a conversation with President-elect Joe Biden.
Trump did not fully acknowledge his electoral defeat.
Although Trump wants to leave the White House, he still speaks - without evidence - of election fraud.
Pence last replaced Trump
Trump hardly appeared in public recently.
As Vice President, Pence performed many of the ceremonial duties, including greeting members of the National Guard who guarded Parliament after the Capitol was attacked.
Pence is likely to attend Biden's swearing-in on January 20th.
Biden had invited him explicitly.
Trump, on the other hand, had already announced at the beginning of January that he would not appear for Biden's swearing-in.
The Washington Post and the news agencies Reuters and AP now report that Trump plans to leave Washington on the morning of January 20 for his property in Mar-a-Lago, Florida.
Then a farewell ceremony like a state visit was planned, it said.
A few days ago, the US House of Representatives voted for the second impeachment proceedings against Trump.
After the storming of the Capitol, the president has to answer for "inciting a riot".
The process in the Senate will probably only be decided after Biden is sworn in.
