Friedrich Merz has offered the newly elected CDU leader Armin Laschet to stand by for the post of Federal Minister of Economics.
His spokesman confirmed this to SPIEGEL.
He reacted "calmly" to the defeat in the race for the presidency.
The task now is to shape the future of the CDU together.
The Reuters news agency had previously reported on it.
"I offered the new party chairman to join the current federal government and take over the Federal Ministry of Economics," said Merz.
