Retirement homes are considered hot spots in the corona pandemic: The virus quickly finds many victims there.
Residents are therefore given preference to be vaccinated.
But even after that, they are not immediately protected.
Almost a million people in
Germany have
already been
vaccinated
against Corona
Sars-CoV-2
.
First study data reveal: That's how long it takes for the
corona vaccine to work
at all.
It shows: Anyone who has the procedure behind them can by no means rest and
let go of
all
caution
.
Munich - More than 842,000 people in Germany have now been
vaccinated against the new coronavirus
for the first time
: this is borne out by the latest figures from the “digital vaccination rate monitoring” of the Berlin Robert Koch Institute (RKI).
In Bavaria alone, 167,915 people have already received the first injection (registration number: January 14th).
Among them are 53,456 residents of nursing homes.
Only in North Rhine-Westphalia, almost 76,000, more home residents have already been vaccinated.
It will take a while before the situation in the homes relaxes.
Because: Even those who have received the first injection are not immediately protected against
corona infection
: the
immune
system needs time to arm itself against the pathogen.
Corona: How long does it take for the vaccination to work?
Full effect only after a few weeks
But how long?
For "Comirnaty", the joint
vaccine from Biontech and Pfizer
, according to the manufacturer, early vaccination protection can be proven after just twelve days.
The proportion of participants in the registration study who became infected despite being vaccinated was already significantly lower than in the comparison group at this point in time.
The latter had only received a placebo, i.e. a dummy vaccination.
From this data, the study authors calculated an effectiveness of
52 percent after twelve days
.
The full effect of around 95 percent was only achieved
seven days after the second vaccination dose
, which was given on day 21 after the first injection.
According to the
Pharmaceutical newspaper
, immune protection should
build up
just as quickly
after vaccination with the
vaccine from
the US company Moderna.
Data from Israel prove
that the vaccination
does not protect
itself
immediately
and that it is still possible to get infected during this time.
According to official information, 17 percent of the currently seriously ill (as of January 12) had already received a first vaccination there.
Corona: Vaccine from Biontech and Pfizer - 17 days after first vaccination not yet fully protected
However, experts assume that there would be significantly more there without vaccination.
A study by "Clalit", Israel's largest health insurance company, shows how well the vaccination from Biontech and Pfizer has proven itself in widespread use.
There, around 200,000 vaccinated people over the age of 60 were compared with an equally large group of non-vaccinated people.
The number of infected people in the vaccinated group was therefore 33 percent lower than in the group without vaccination from the 13th day after the first dose - a reduction by a third.
Prof. Ran Balicer, a physician at "Clalit", spoke to the
Jedi'ot Acharonot
newspaper
about preliminary but encouraging results.
However, even
17 days after the first vaccination
,
these
did not indicate full vaccination protection.
For senior citizens or young caregivers: Even those who have already been vaccinated should not immediately
abandon
all caution - and continue
to observe
central rules such as
keeping your distance, hand hygiene and wearing a mask
.
