  • The blast in Deir a-Zour province in eastern Syria

A huge explosion took place in a compound belonging to Iran's loyalist forces in the eastern Syrian province of Deir Azor, several media outlets affiliated with the Syrian opposition reported.

The blast reportedly took place in a large compound near the town of Buchmal, in the border area between Syria and Iraq.

According to the Syrian Center for Human Rights, a rebel-affiliated organization based in London, aircraft noise was heard before the blast.

It was also reported that several warehouses and a residential building, formerly used by the terrorist organization ISIS, were destroyed as a result of the incident.

The cause of the explosion is still unknown and no casualties have been reported so far.

The border crossing area between Iraq and Syria has become a point of contention in the past two years between the Assad regime and its allies that control the region and a host of factors, including the US-led coalition, Kurdish militias and ISIS.

However, reports of an explosion in the territory held by pro-Iranian militias add to tensions in the region after a widespread attack on several targets belonging to the Assad regime was carried out on Wednesday.

A U.S. intelligence source told the Qatari news network Al-Jazeera that U.S. intelligence was used by the force that carried out the attack, and that its purpose was to stockpile weapons that Iran had transferred to its metamorphoses in the region.

The US source also claimed that a warehouse used by Iran to transfer materials for its nuclear program from Syria to its territory had been attacked.

Tensions with Iranian metastases in eastern Syria are growing alongside escalation in the Red Sea arena, where it was revealed this week that Iran has deployed advanced suicide drones that could hit targets in Israel. Which intends to send a large naval force to the Red Sea in order to protect its interests in the region.
