The authorities in the American capital, Washington, have strengthened their security measures and closed a number of its famous landmarks, with the establishment of checkpoints at the entrances to the city center in preparation for the inauguration of President-elect Joe Biden on January 20.

Reuters quoted US officials as saying that about 25,000 National Guard troops would be deployed in the capital to secure Biden's inauguration, especially after the incursion into the Capitol headquarters by supporters of outgoing President Donald Trump.

"We cannot allow a repeat of the chaos and illegal practices that the United States and the world witnessed last week," Matthew Miller, director of the Washington Secret Service field office, told reporters.

For its part, the US National Parks Authority announced the closure of the National Mall and a number of landmarks in Washington until at least January 21.

It is noteworthy that a number of White House advisers have resigned from their posts due to the storming of some of Trump's supporters in the US Congress building, while the outgoing president faces increasing calls for his removal from office under the twenty-fifth amendment of the US Constitution.
