After the announcement of an agreement reached on Saturday between the representatives of the CFCM on a "charter of principles" of Islam, Emmanuel Macron will receive its leaders on Monday, announced the Elysee.

The Minister of the Interior Gérald Darmanin will also be present at this meeting with the representatives of the French Council of Muslim Worship scheduled for noon at the Elysee Palace, when the bill on separatism arrives in the Assembly.

On Saturday, the leaders of the CFCM had announced that they had reached an agreement, after weeks of divisions, on an eight-page text framing the practice of Islam in France.

This "charter of principles" of Islam in France notably reaffirms "the principle of equality between men and women", the "compatibility" of the Muslim faith with the Republic and also insists on "the rejection of the instrumentalisation of the 'Islam for political ends' and the 'non-interference' of foreign states, had detailed the president of the French Council of Muslim Worship, Mohammed Moussaoui, in a statement.

A heated debate

After this meeting with Emmanuel Macron, a National Council of Imams (CNI) will be set up.

He will be responsible for "labeling" imams practicing in France and may withdraw their approval, particularly in the event of a breach of the charter.

The conception of this charter had triggered a serious crisis within the representative body of Muslims, often criticized for its lack of representativeness.

At the end of December, the rector of the great Mosque of Paris, Chems-Eddine Hafiz, had slammed the door to discussions on the charter and the future CNI, pointing out the influence of an “Islamist component” within the CFCM.

According to Ibrahim Alci, a vice-president of the CFCM, who had participated in a meeting on this charter on Saturday in Beauvau, the adoption of the charter by all the federations of the CFCM should not, however, pose any problems.

"We must include everyone and say clearly that Islam is not incompatible with the Republic, far from it," he then reacted.
