The electric blanket in a couple's house in Schongau catches fire - but they can't make it out.

It is thanks to the intervention of neighbors that nothing worse has happened.

Schongau

- Even a day later, Max Altstätter still has to nibble on the incident.

When he returned from the bakery at around 8 a.m. on Saturday - much earlier than usual - and the dog really wanted to go into the garden, he noticed a fire in his neighbors.

While his wife alerted the fire department, he ran over immediately, saw irritated burning objects in front of the door and looked into the house.

"Acrid smoke came towards me," he says.

Inside, Altstätter finally found the neighbor who looked after her husband exhausted in one room and reported on the fire in another bedroom.

Electric blanket triggers fire: "I no longer believed that anyone would help us"

The electric blanket had caught fire, and the fire quickly spread to the mattress and other blankets.

The smoke alarm had woken the older woman and with great effort she had even managed to get some of the burning things out of the house - but she could no longer make the emergency call.

Because her husband could not leave the house himself, she stayed inside too.

"I no longer believed that anyone would help us," she later told her neighbors.

This sentence still preoccupies Altstätter.

“It's going to be tough on the kidneys, I still have to deal with the whole incident,” he explains.

As soon as he was inside, he took the remaining incendiary objects outside and covered everything with snow.

His son also hurried to the neighbors, opened all the windows and looked after the couple with his father until the rescue workers arrived shortly afterwards.

The residents of the house had inhaled much of the smoke and were taken to hospital with poisoning.

Electric blanket triggers fire: the fire brigade commander is happy about the mild outcome

"Luck in misfortune" is how Schongau's fire brigade commander Werner Berchtold sums up the operation on Saturday morning.

“In the middle of the night, that would probably have been a traumatic mission.” The house is quite old and winding, a lot of wood is built in.

The residents themselves were not mobile enough to leave the house.

If smoke and fire had spread in it, it would have been difficult for the fire brigade to enter the house, says Berchtold.

He is glad that it turned out comparatively lightly.

The firefighters went into the house wearing respiratory masks, searched the house with thermal imaging cameras, ventilated and carried out measurements.

After a short time, the 25 firefighters were able to end the mission

They didn't have to delete anything.

There is hardly anything left of the electric blanket.

Max Altstätter is happy that the rescue workers were there quickly and that nothing worse happened to his neighbors.

“Usually,” he says, “I go to the bakery later.

And my dog is very lazy in the morning.

I was surprised that he really wanted to get out. ”In retrospect, he is happy about these circumstances, otherwise he would probably not have noticed the fire in time.

"Everything had to be like this."

The police and fire brigades are always on duty in the Weilheim-Schongau district.

The Wildsteiger fire brigade also recently had a mission: the fire of a bulldog in a barn in Hausen caused a major alarm on Thursday evening.

Because the farmer reacted quickly, there was no worse accident.
