Guo Shaojie and Yan Minhua, members of the Diaoyu Action Committee, were sentenced to probation for trespassing at the Yasukuni Shrine in Japan in 2018, and then appealed.
The Second Small Court of the Supreme Court of Japan rejected the appeal on January 15 and upheld the first and second instance probation rulings.
The judgment stated that the two broke into the outer courtyard of the shrine on December 12, 2018. Guo Shaojie displayed a banner "Don't Forget the Nanjing Massacre" and burned objects similar to the tablet, while Yan Minhua used his mobile phone to film the behavior.

The defendant argued that the two had a legitimate reason for entering the shrine and claimed not guilty.
However, the Tokyo District Court's first-instance judgment stated that "the administrators are prohibited from entering (shrines) for purposes other than visiting worship." Guo Shaojie was sentenced to 8 months imprisonment and 3 years probation; Yan Minhua was sentenced to 6 months imprisonment and 3 years probation.
