Palestinian Authority Elections:
The official Palestinian media today (Sunday) quoted the chairman of the Central Election Commission, Hanna Nasser, who said he was working with committee members to circumvent the possibility that Israel would prevent the vote in East Jerusalem.
"We are concentrating efforts to enable the election process in East Jerusalem," Nasser said. "We have alternatives that will allow the Palestinian residents to participate in the process without the deployment of ballot boxes."
Nasser added that some of the options being considered are electronic voting via the Internet or placing ballots in the Palestinian Authority for East Jerusalem residents registered in the voter register.
On Friday evening, Palestinian Authority Chairman Mahmoud Abbas issued a presidential order for the first time since 2006. According to the order, the date of the parliamentary elections is May 22, and the PA chairman is due to hold on July 31. Meanwhile, talks are expected to take place this week between the Palestinian factions in Cairo to determine the electoral mechanism.
