They help to solve criminal offenses, have a de-escalating effect and give the officers more security: For a good year, police officers in the district have been equipped with so-called body cameras.

In the meantime, incorruptible electronic witnesses have become an integral part of everyday police work.

Fürstenfeldbruck

- The strong man is often marked in front of the cell phone camera.

If the recording device hangs on a police officer's chest, that is quickly over.

"The Bodycam is particularly effective with youth groups," says Commissioner Christian Stadler from the Germeringen police.

In the past the ringleaders often sounded out and sometimes exceeded their limits, now they are often pious.

The cameras have been in use for over a year.

And the police inspections in the district draw a consistently positive conclusion.

The spokesmen for the guards repeatedly emphasize the de-escalating effect in particular.

Those who are filmed pull themselves together - at least most of them.

equal opportunity

Andreas Ruch, deputy head of the Germeringer inspection, also sees a "certain equality of opportunity" compared to cell phone videos.

In addition, unjustified allegations and allegations against the officials could be effectively refuted.

However, the legislature has set tight limits to the use of the bodycams.

The cameras are only activated if the police fear an escalation.

If a device is switched on, this must be communicated to the other party.

If the recordings are not needed, they are automatically deleted after 21 days.

The cameras are effective - even when they are not switched on.

“Just being there often contributes to de-escalation,” says Winfried Naßl, spokesman for the Olching police.

Like the other guards in the district, the officers in the Amperstadt have a total of four cameras available.

Every squad car crew has one with them.

Plain police officers are not allowed to wear a body cam.

Solve crimes

The electronic helpers also help to solve crimes and convict offenders.

Winfried Naßl remembers a case from spring.

When the police tried to settle a dispute in a youth group, one of the young men became aggressive.

There was a tussle and the policeman was slightly injured.

The bodycam had recorded the attack - perfect evidence in court.

The attacker was convicted.

Since the introduction of the bodycams in November 2019, the Germeringen police have had seven proceedings due to an attack on officials or resistance, in which the recordings of the cameras could be used in court.

In eight other cases, the bodycams recorded insults against officials.

Michael Fischer, deputy head of the police in Fürstenfeldbruck, has identified another advantage of cameras when it comes to resistance.

You could also start a conflict developing.

Cell phone videos of witnesses, on the other hand, often only show the arrest - which sometimes seems brutal when the delinquent struggles.
