A ski tourer in distress triggered a large-scale operation by the Steingaden / Peiting mountain rescue service at Wolfskopf near Trauchgau on Saturday.

Because of the weather and the large amount of snow, the rescue operation demanded everything from the emergency services.

Peiting / Steingaden

- It was 10.30 a.m. on Saturday when the emergency call came in.

A ski tourer had suffered an acute internal emergency at Wolfskopf near Trauchgau.

An emergency doctor's helicopter was called from Reutte to quickly help the unconscious man.

Because of the thick cloud cover, however, he could not approach the accident site and had to turn away.

On the second approach, the crew finally managed to drop a mountain rescue air rescuer.

He fought his way on skis through the fresh snow that had fallen one meter deep in the night towards the Wolfskopf summit.

As the patient's condition continued to deteriorate, the mountain rescue operations manager decided to send additional personnel to the accident site at the same time.

With a caterpillar quad and an all-terrain vehicle, two teams tried to advance along the forest road on the north side towards the patient.

Rescuers have to go up on skis because of the deep snow

From a height of around 1400 meters, however, progress was impossible even with the caterpillar quad, and the rescuers also had to climb on skis.

At the same time, the helicopter picked up other air rescuers at the mountain rescue station in Steingaden and flew them towards the deployment site.

During the entire rescue operation, special attention had to be paid to the avalanche situation, which was rated locally as the second highest danger level 4.

The ground-based emergency services tried to carry an Akja to the summit of Wolfskopf in order to be able to transport the patient into the valley.

An emergency doctor who was traveling privately provided first aid

In the meantime, fortunately, a mountain rescue emergency doctor who was on a private ski tour had come across the patient and was able to look after him.

On the third approach, the cloud cover finally cleared briefly and the helicopter was able to abseil other emergency services directly at the scene of the accident.

The patient, who was meanwhile severely hypothermic, received emergency medical attention and was placed in the vacuum bed.

Thus, on the fifth approach, the emergency doctor and the 48-year-old ski tourer could be picked up and flown directly to the hospital in Füssen.

The four mountain guards who remained at the site accompanied the three relatives of the ski tourer into the valley.

The mission ended after 3.5 hours.
