The Kremlin often underestimates the importance of opposition leader Alexei Navalny, but yesterday's deception by the authorities indicates the concern of President Vladimir Putin.

Had there been "no one," as Putin mocked him last month when he shrugged off the assassination operation, Navalny's flight from Berlin to Moscow would not have been diverted at the last minute to another airport to avoid a demonstration in support of someone on the verge of death from nerve gas poisoning.

Navalny did not elaborate on why he returned at that time, although he claimed that he missed his country and that there was never a question of whether he would return from Germany, where he had been treated for the past five months.

He may have feared a decline in his influence if he remained in exile for a long time, especially in an election year.

In September, elections will be held for a parliament controlled by Putin's loyalists, and Navalny and his people plan to advance tactical votes that could hurt Kremlin candidates.

Another reason for scheduling the return of the 44-year-old Navalny could be a change of government in the United States, where in two days Joe Biden will be sworn in as president.

Biden has promised to use a tougher hand against Putin compared to outgoing President Donald Trump, who has refrained from criticizing the Russian president throughout his tenure, which has been overshadowed by, among other things, the investigation into Russian involvement in the 2016 election.

"The Kremlin's attacks against Navalny are not only a violation of human rights, but also an insult to the Russian people who want their voices heard," said Jake Sullivan, Biden's designated national security adviser.

Became a prisoner of conscience.

Navalny took a bold gamble upon his return.

He apparently believes that after being rescued once from an assassination attempt, the Kremlin will not dare to do so again, at least not any time soon, when the eyes of the world are on Russia.

"I know I'm right. I'm not afraid of anything," Navalny said ahead of yesterday's landing at Sheremetyevo Airport after the flight from Berlin was not cleared to land at its original destination, the airport and Nokovo.

He knew what was north of him, as the Prisons Service announced he would try to serve the three-and-a-half-year prison sentence on the condition he was sentenced to in 2014, after being convicted of embezzlement.

Navalny claims the case was sewn against him.

"His arrest is further evidence that the Russian authorities want to silence him," said Amnesty International, which has been calling him a "prisoner of conscience" since yesterday.

Prolonged imprisonment may turn Navalny into a kind of tortured saint and strengthen his status as Putin's ultimate rival, hoping to revive a protest movement that has died out in recent years due to the regime's harsh hand.

Nablani's poisoning in August, ahead of Russia's provincial elections, did not provoke mass demonstrations and the official Russian media did little to deal with the affair.

Moscow is trying to portray Navalny as a puppet of the West, and to link the condemnations heard from EU countries and the United States since Navalny's well-publicized arrest at the airport to the crises they are going through.

Russia's Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov said today that the reactions to Nabalani's arrest were an attempt to "divert attention from the rift in the Western development model."

It is not yet known when the court hearing will take place to determine whether to put Navalny behind bars, but the new development in the affair will increase tensions between the West and Russia.

This will be one of many crises that will be laid at the door of the new administration in Washington.
