Donald Trump leaves the White House on a final unfavorable poll, with 34% good opinions on his action, according to a survey by the Gallup institute published on Monday, the worst figure in a term that has deeply divided Americans.

According to this survey, conducted between January 4 and January 15 among 1,023 people, the popularity rating of the outgoing American president reached an all-time low a few days before the inauguration of his successor, former vice-president Joe Biden.

Several times in 2017, he had reached a low of 35% of favorable opinions, especially after deadly violence during a rally, in the summer, of the American far-right in Charlottesville, Virginia.

The Gallup Institute, which since 1938 has measured the popularity of White House hosts throughout their terms of office, points out that Donald Trump is the only one who has never reached the bar of 50% of favorable opinions on his work.

Donald Trump thus started his presidency with 45% satisfaction, before reaching 49% in early 2020, and 46% before the election on November 3.

But his refusal to acknowledge his defeat, his attempts to invalidate the result of the ballot and the assault of his supporters against Congress on January 6, not to mention the toll of the coronavirus pandemic, have contributed to the erosion of his rating. popularity in recent months.

Over time, Donald Trump is leaving office with an average popularity of 41%, the worst rating among all outgoing presidents, according to Gallup, which measures this indicator since Harry Truman, the least popular American head of state so far. (45.4% from 1945 to 1953).

Another lesson, Donald Trump leaves a country deeply divided between his supporters and his opponents.

In this latest poll, 82% of Republicans approve of his action, compared to only 4% of Democrats and 30% for independent voters.

For Gallup, his presidential defeat can be explained in part by his inability to rally beyond his electoral base, considering that less than one in three American voters identify with the Republican Party and a majority of Independents feels close to the Democratic Party.
