With a hook and a ball of wool, and through the Emigromic Art Project, a group of women managed to secure a source of income for them in their homes by using these simple materials to manually sew dolls of different shapes.

Imigrome is the art of Japanese crochet and it consists of two parts, “ami”, which means crochet and “groumy”, which means the stuffed doll, according to what the assistant director of the project explained, Lillian Azar, indicating that the beginning of drawing the required pattern on paper and studying the length and width of the piece and the number of stitches it needs.

Azar pointed out that the women of the project work in two groups, the first within the project center “Al-Hayat” in Jaramana in the countryside of Damascus, which manufactures and produces in it, and the second within the houses, indicating that the team creates countless different shapes and is not restricted to a specific model.

A number of participants in the project emphasized that work gave them an opportunity to achieve a source of income within their homes, as Tadora Boutros said that she feels happy when weaving the dolls and that working within her home relieves her of the burden of job and routine, noting that imigromy needs focus, creativity and innovation of new artistic forms.

Bayan Al-Homsi indicated that such work saves her from negative energy, explaining that she uses hooks according to the size of the pieces, large or small, and uses the plastic needle to connect the pieces with each other.

Regarding the stages of knitting, Al-Homsi said that she forms the magic circle and then stitches the filler, which is about wrapping the thread around the hook and inserting it into the magic circle and pulling a second thread from inside the circle, then removing the two strings from the hook and repeating the process to reach the required number and then sealing each work or each path Stitch and stuffed with dicron.

In turn, the trainer Fida Ammar explained that the center set up free training courses for all groups as a first step, and then began with paid courses to teach this art, specializing in the principles of crochet for the children’s category, which is an entertainment activity for them under the title “The child can make his own doll” in addition to vocational training for adults so that they can make The dolls are marketed and relied upon as a source of income.

For her part, Dr. Batoul Muhammad, Director of Al-Hayat Center, pointed out that the center has adopted such activities as it is qualified to hold training courses and provide assistance to women producers to provide work of the required level, noting the demand for it as it has become a demand in the markets and bazaars of handicrafts as it is presented as gifts, especially in the holiday seasons.
