Internet activities have increased under the new crown pneumonia epidemic.

The Productivity Council announced today (19th) that the Hong Kong Computer Security Incidents Coordination Centre handled 8,346 cybersecurity incidents last year, down 12% year-on-year, but 3,483 phishing attacks were involved, a sharp increase of 35% year-on-year. Accounted for 48% of the total number of accidents.

The center believes that phishing attacks are related to the increase in online activities during the epidemic. For example, citizens use more online meetings, distance learning, online shopping, etc., so that criminals can take advantage.

Some phishing will even pretend to be a health organization, release the latest information on the epidemic, request bitcoin donations, etc., and also attack online food delivery platforms.

The Bureau of Production and Health Promotion suggests that companies should formulate cyber security strategies for the new normal and provide employees with cyber security guidelines for working from home and online meetings.

According to Chen Zhongwen, General Manager of Digital Transformation, HKPC, 2020 is a watershed for digital transformation. Under the influence of the epidemic, companies and lifestyles are rapidly turning to contactless solutions, such as remote work and learning, online shopping, and the use of mobile financial services. .

Cyber attacks under the new normal, including intrusions into online conferences, attacks on remote access, phishing and extortion, have also appeared at the same time.

The Productivity Council recommends that companies should formulate new cyber security strategies, monitor third-party security risks, adopt enhanced verification, etc., and enhance employee cyber security awareness, such as providing "work from home" cyber security guidelines.

The Hong Kong Computer Security Incidents Coordination Center handled 8,346 cyber security incidents last year, down 12% year-on-year, but among them, 3,483 phishing attacks increased by 35% year-on-year, accounting for 48% of the total.

This year, the HKPC will pay special attention to mobile payment, which may become the target of attacks. Three virtual banks have encountered different security incidents, including system overload, DDoS attacks and data leakage.

In addition, the application of new technologies such as 5G, the Internet of Things, and artificial intelligence may also cause more systems or data traffic to be exposed to untrusted networks.

The bureau predicts that targeted and organized cyber attacks will surge in 2021.

Ron Nuo, an information security consultant of the Hong Kong Computer Emergency Response Team Coordination Center, reminded that 5G home users should pay attention to the level of network encryption and regular updates.
