The leader of the Republican majority in the US Senate, Mitch McConnell, confirmed that outgoing President Donald Trump incited the crowds that stormed the Congress building on the sixth of this month.

AFP quoted the Republican senator from Kentucky as saying in a speech in the Senate today that "Trump incited the angry crowds that stormed into Congress after charging them with lies about fraud in the presidential elections."

McConnell denounced what Trump supporters had done by storming the Congress building, describing them as "violent criminals who tried to prevent Congress from fulfilling its duty" by creating disturbances to prevent Joe Biden's victory in the presidential election.

Democratic Senator Chuck Schumer, who will succeed McConnell as President of the Senate, condemned the storming of the Congress building, describing the perpetrators as “insurgents and terrorists who tried to prevent the transfer of power,” stressing that Trump urged them to move to storm Congress.

On the 13th of this month, the US House of Representatives agreed by a majority of its members to hold Trump accountable for incitement to rebellion in storming Congress, in a move that would open the door to the Senate to prevent him from assuming the presidency again if convicted.
