A controversy around WhatsApp has led to an increase of nearly 10,000% of the installations of this application.

American encrypted messaging Signal is on the rise more than ever.

According to data from the Sensor Tower institute, a specialist in mobile application data, Signal was downloaded 47 million times around the world between January 4 and 17.

This hefty figure represents a dramatic leap in the popularity of the app.

Between December 21 and January 3, the two previous weeks, Signal had only been installed on 491,000 devices.

Growth is therefore over 9500%.

This success does not stop.

According to Sensor Tower, Signal was downloaded 3 million times on the day of January 14 alone, and 7.7 million times the next day!

The newcomers therefore seem to convince their friends to install the application in their turn.

Telegram also growing strongly

Signal takes full advantage of a controversy affecting WhatsApp, Facebook's rival messaging system.

Since January 4, the latter has warned its 2 billion users that they must accept an update of the personal data processing policy to continue using the application.

This confusingly worded update sparked a movement of distrust towards WhatsApp, which is accused of sharing its users' data with its Facebook parent company in order to feed marketing profiles.

This global bad buzz also benefits Russian Telegram messaging.

The latter was downloaded 33 million times between January 4 and 17, an increase of 150% compared to the previous fortnight.

Here again, the wave is far from over.

Telegram was installed on 2.5 million devices on January 14, and 3.7 million the next day.

WhatsApp is on the rise again

Facebook strongly denies that WhatsApp would not protect the privacy of its users.

The update concerns new tools for companies wishing to use messaging as a channel for their customer service, explains the American group.

In an attempt to put out the fire, the update was postponed to May 15, instead of February 8.

According to SensorTower, WhatsApp downloads were 19 million between January 4 and 17, compared to 22.8 million in the previous two weeks.

However, installations have been on the rise again for a few days: 1.5 million downloads on January 15, against 1.2 million the day before.
