The US has registered almost 24 million cases of COVID-19 and 20% of global deaths, which exceed two million. Biden announced that he will not lift international travel restrictions from January 26 from Europe and Brazil after Trump announced this Monday.

The United States reached 400,103 registered coronavirus deaths on Tuesday, according to the count of NBC News, Telemundo's sister network.

This is a dramatic milestone that seemed unimaginable at the beginning of the pandemic a year ago.

The virus has caused more than two million deaths worldwide, according to data from Johns Hopkins University.

The number of deaths in the United States is the worst on a global scale, although its population

represents less than 5% of the 7.7 billion people who inhabit the planet

(according to United Nations data).

The United States confirmed the first case of coronavirus detected in its territory on January 21, 2020. It was a man residing in Seattle, Washington.

Almost a year later, 24 million people have been infected in the national territory, the highest number of confirmed cases in the world.

California became the first state in the country to reach 3 million cases on Monday, and Los Angeles County surpassed the 1 million case mark over the weekend, according to data from NBC News.

The death toll is

much higher than expected

at the beginning of the pandemic.

Dr. Deborah Birx the coordinator of the management of the coronavirus pandemic White House warned in April that

up to

240,000 Americans could die of coronavirus even if containment measures are followed "almost perfectly"

Outgoing President Donald Trump described that estimated number as "worrisome."

Afterwards, it has come under fire for downplaying the threat posed by the virus and then obstructing the federal government's response.

He himself was infected in early October and had to be hospitalized.

As health officials rush to vaccinate as many vulnerable people as possible, the coronavirus has continued to spread at record rates across the country, and the United States faced the risk of new strains of mutant viruses spreading from the United Kingdom. , Brazil and South Africa.

as well as new emerging strains in the US.

But in California, Dr. Erica Pan, a state epidemiologist, recommended that providers suspend dosing of a batch of Moderna vaccine while they investigate reports of possible allergic reactions.

"Fewer than 10 people required medical attention in a 24-hour span,"

Pan said, adding that they are issuing this warning "out of extreme caution and also recognizing the extremely limited supply of vaccines."

President-elect Joe Biden declared last week that he would deploy the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) and the National Guard to help establish vaccine clinics across the country as part of a ambitious plan to increase the speed of vaccination.

US travel restrictions

Biden, who will take office on Wednesday, will not lift international travel restrictions from January 26 from Europe and Brazil as Trump announced on Monday, said Jen Psaki, his future press officer.

"On the advice of our medical team, the (Biden) Administration does not plan to lift these restrictions on January 26. In fact,

we plan to strengthen public health measures on international travel

to further mitigate the spread of the coronavirus." Psaki noted in a message on Twitter.

On that date, Biden, who takes office on January 20, will be president of the United States and, therefore, will be the one with the capacity to maintain or suspend those restrictions.

The future president-elect spokesperson replied minutes after Trump announced the end of travel restrictions to the United States from the European Union, the United Kingdom and Brazil as of January 26

"With the pandemic worsening, and more contagious variants emerging around the world, this is not the time to lift restrictions on international travel, "added Psaki.
